Font - AITA for not tipping the pizza place on an order for 35 pizzas? Everyone Sucks Not my story, but my brother's, and I'm really unsure where I stand on it.

Font - My little brother, is doing an internship with a large corporation. He organized an internal food drive, in which the floor that donates the most wins free pizza for lunch on a Friday.
  • 04
Font - At the conclusion of the food drive, my brother called the pizza place on a Monday and asked about the logistics of ordering 35 pizzas, on a Friday, during lunch hour. They said it wouldn't be a problem, and to place the order Wednesday morning.

Font - He calls back Wednesday, and speaks with the same manager. The manager tells him they can no longer do the order, as it's too big of an order to do during their Friday lunch rush. He recommends my brother try the middle of the following week, and they agree on the following Tuesday.

Font - Monday rolls around and my brother places the order, and uses the corporate credit card to pay over the phone. The manager then tells him they cannot have 35 pizzas ready at 12:30, but can have 18 ready at noon, and another 17 ready at 12:45. My brother tells him that would work. When asked what to put on the line for a tip amount, my brother responds $0.

Font - Noon on Tuesday, my brother shows up at the pizza place, picks up the first 18 pizzas, and delivers them to the winning office floor lunch room. Then, he returns to the store to pick up the remaining 17 pizzas.

Font - While waiting for the second round of pizzas at the store, the following exchange occurs: Manager: "Are you going to leave a tip?" Brother: "No."
  • 09
Font - Manager: "Usually with large orders like this you are required to leave a tip" Brother: "You aren't delivering or serving these pizzas. When we talked on the phone yesterday you did not mention a mandatory tip".
  • 10
Font - Manager: "It's corporate policy that orders this large require a 15% gratuity". Brother: "That isn't what we agreed to on the phone yesterday. I'm not leaving a tip".
  • 11
Font - Manager: "Well then you aren't getting the rest of your pizzas". At this point, my brother and the manager begin arguing, escalating to the point of my brother's coworker pulling him to the side and recommending a small tip (5%). My brother relents. He tells the manager he will leave a tip, but he wants to choose the amount. He hands the manager his card, who runs it and hands him back a new receipt for the order, with a 15% gratuity assessed ($125 instead of $40).

Font - My brother then gets into a yelling match with the manager, and is escorted out of the restaurant by his coworker. Is my brother the as ?

Font - AmJusAskin 32 Certified Proctologist [21] NTA. They provided awful service, screwed your brother around, acted unprofessionally and didn't earn a tip whatsoever. Then they stole money. Pretty clear IMO.

Font - sometimesnowing Partassipant [3] Yep, for someone not from the States who doesnt have a tipping culture, this is exactly how it appears to me. Edit to add NTA

Font - [deleted] NTA and the manager literally stole from your brother. I'm willing to bet that there is no such rule that states a tip must be left for all large orders. An order cannot be refused to you simply because you don't leave a tip. Any tip your brother did leave would probably go straight into the managers pockets!

Font - T [deleted] At a restaurant I worked at our menu stated that parties of 8 or more and large togo orders automatically add 20% gratuity.
  • 17
Font - [deleted] S Gratuity is there so people like you don't come in with a party of 15, take a servers entire section, stay for 2 hours while they clean up after you and get you everything you need so you can enjoy yourself and your friends and family, only for you to leave nothing.

Font - SpriggitySprite If he wants the person fired this is a great idea. $120 chargeback that the store cant reasonably get back is a pretty good reason to fire a person.

Font - darklingplarnter Certified Proctologist [26] I mean a popular pizza place must make like hundreds of pizzas a day. Why does it matter to them whether those pizzas are more concentrated around one order versus spread across hundreds of orders. It actually saves them time working the register. Your brother definitely got out of hand in his reaction, but the manager mislead him and then shook him down and stole from him. I'd almost say NTA.

Font - D Strat missmegz1492 Supreme Court Just-a ESH. First, it was the same manager who was jerking him around. Telling him it would be no big deal then changing his mind days later. That's an as move. Secondly, if there is a "mandatory gratuity" it should be discussed before hand and especially before the rest of the order is withheld. I agree with another poster however, the second something becomes "mandatory" it's no longer a tip, it's a fee.

Font - Your brother should have been ready to pay a tip on this big of order. I think it's pretty crazy he didn't even consider it before hand and that makes him the as too.
  • 22
Font - EveningBerry NTA You aren't required to tip, especially in a situation where you're not being served. It would've been a nice gesture but 100% not required. And the fact that he charged the card more than agreed to?? Next level
